Yesterday Apple announced new versions of their MacBook Pro with a number of improvements. Least important was a slight bump in CPU speeds, but much more significant is the introduction of LED backlights instead of flourescent and a massive speed increase in the front side bus. These new notebooks are going to be much faster, the LED backlight will reduce power consumption, and the reduced power consumption will extend battery operating time. In addition to these big changes, they also switched the video chipset from ATI to Nvidia.
I was so impressed with these changes that I ordered one of these new Macbook Pros for myself. I selected the basic 15″ Macbook Pro with a 2.2 GHz Core 2 Duo, 2GB of RAM, and I increased the hard drive size to 160GB. Because this makes it a build to order system it is not scheduled to ship for 6 days, and of course it will be coming from China too.
It was just before the first MacBook Pro was released when I bought my first Apple notebook, a 15″ G4 PowerBook. That notebook is still going strong, my partner uses it every day. And I do have an early MacBook which is still working, but sometimes I’m annoyed by the small display area.
This new notebook will be used for web design, recreational surfing, keeping in touch with this webserver when I travel, and offloading digital photos from my Canon DSLR when traveling. I’m sure it will also be carrying around my MP3s too, so the 160gb hard drive will likely be well used.
Naturally I’m now in anticipating new toy mode. And the Apple TV that was ordered for me is somewhere between Indiana and California right now too. So many toys, so little time….
