Works well IF you connect it using the correct cable August 30, 2010 kozi I am convinced that many of the problems people have had with this are due to installing it with the wrong type of cable. This is understandable, because DVI cables ARE confusing, with many variations that appear identical at first glance. The ONLY type that will work with this is a DUAL LINK DVI-D. The DVI-A, analog, and the DVI-I, integrated, will not socket in the adapter. However, many people have probably not looked for a Dual-Link rating (meaning that it can send messages both ways). A Dual-Link cable is physically identical. The differences are all internal. Look for a label, "Dual Link" or a second D designation "DVI-D D".
This works extremely well with my 27" Dell UltraSharp with a late 2009 Mac mini at the highest available resolution (2560x1440 for the mini, although the monitor will display 2560x1600)). I would normally rate it four stars because Apple has a monopoly on this device and charges accordingly. However, to compensate for the review of people who have not given this device a fair chance because they installed the wrong cable, I upped the rating to 5 stars.
PS: Without this adapter and using a straight cable, I was able to run a 2009 Mac mini at its highest resolution with no video problems. However, when I upped the brightness on the screen above 45%, the Airport card kept dropping the network connection at random intervals of 15 minutes to 24 hours. Bluetooth dropouts about twice a week started, too. I think that driving this large of a monitor started overheating problems on the Bluetooth/Airport daughter card. This adapter allows the monitor to be driven at 100% brightness. If you are having these types of problems with a mini while driving a large monitor, this unique cable adapter may solve the problem.
Just right or overkill? August 23, 2010 Annelise S. (TN, United States) The product, which was a good bargain from the seller, is a bit of a conundrum in Apple's line-up of mini DisplayPort adapters. It's really only needed if one has a 30" Cinema Display, for which is delivers bright, crisp images on the massive display.
Yet, even with its dual-link nature, it doesn't work well on single-link, DVI-equipped monitors, nor does it work with a dual-link DVI to HDMI adapter on HDMI-equipped monitors. For the former it's overkill; for the latter, a cheap mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter works equally well (or not, depending on which version of MacBook or MacBook Pro you have).
